Those working in the capacity of physician's assistants are called upon to diagnose and treat numerous medical conditions under a doctor's or surgeon's supervision. For example, a person may decide to specialize in pediatrics, internal medicine, geriatrics, emergency care or orthopedics. Before a candidate applies for this type of program, however, he or she must acquire a bachelor's degree. A biology degree is preferred by most program administrators.

Prior to complementing his or her enrollment, each prospective student is required to shadow someone who is already working in this profession. In addition, what they observe when participating in this preliminary training must be logged. Once this has been completed and the student has enrolled in a program, he or she will begin classroom training, the latter of which is called the didactic year.

The following year of training consists of clinical experience. During this part of the program the person must perform tasks directly related to patient care, including outpatient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. Medical seminars must also be attended by students in their second year of training. After one's training is complete, the graduate is required to pass an examination in order to work as a physician's assistant.

The average work week for someone in this position is forty or more hours. The person's schedule will largely depend upon that of his or her superiors. In addition, some professionals may be required to work on-call when needed, which will also depend on the needs of the supervising surgeon or doctor.
