Career guide: Radiology and medical imaging

Amongst the various technologies and advances that have influenced modern medicine, the most profound of these are those related to medical imaging. Medical imaging has enabled doctors to detect and diagnose problems without invasive surgery and has significantly reduced guess work. X-Ray is probably the oldest and the most universal of imaging technologies. These days, considering how expensive and complicated imaging equipments are, to be a x-ray technician one has to undergo a certification program from x ray tech schools.

A career in medical imaging and radiology holds promise. A degree or a diploma from an X ray technician school is a required to step into the industry. There are numerous online and on campus radiology technician schools that offer accredited programs. Medical imaging is not just limited to X-ray; it also includes ultrasound imaging, MRI and CT scan - the mainstream imaging technologies in use. As these instruments are so expensive and complicated, skilled technicians are required for the job.

A radiology tech’s job description mainly includes operating the machine, ensuring patient safety and diagnosing medical conditions. Salary of a radiology technician varies from state to state depending on the factors of demand and supply. Furthermore, your educational qualification will also determine your market value. For example, a bachelor’s degree in radiologic technologies will fetch you a better paying job than a basic certification or associate’s degree. Certificate courses and associate degrees are offered by a number of on and off campus vocational x-ray technician schools.

For basic assistant level jobs there is the one year certificate course, courses offered are also available online. You can study for it online, train at a local school and pass the certification test to get your license. The popular one is the 2 years associate degree program. Both of these programs are offered by most vocational x-ray technician schools. For a career with more options you can choose to take the bachelor program which is a four year course.

Once you complete the training program you will have to get a license or a certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). A license or certification is a necessity these days and almost all healthcare institutes will ask for one before they consider employing you. There are also more advanced courses on ultrasound imaging and MRI. A large number of radiology and imaging schools also have certification courses for ultrasound operators or you can join an ultrasound technician school, or join an off campus program for the same.
